Mean and median side by side

20%
AVERAGEMEDIAN

The mean adds everything up and divides by how many. The median sorts the values and takes the middle one. On symmetrical data they land in roughly the same place.

When they diverge, the data is skewed, stretched out towards one end, and the direction of the gap tells you which way. A mean above the median means a long tail of high values pulling it up.

Reporting only one of them is how a salary figure ends up describing nobody in the room.

In B10 work out the mean of the salaries, and in B11 the median.
