Pull the year, month and day out of a date

25%
YEARMONTHDAY

Excel stores a date as a plain number counting days, and then formats it to look like a date. 14 March 2026 is stored as 46095. That is why dates can be subtracted and why a date can accidentally appear as a five-digit number when the formatting is lost.

YEAR, MONTH and DAY pull the parts back out as numbers. They are what you need the moment somebody asks for a report grouped by month, because a column of full dates cannot be grouped, a column of month numbers can.

The order dates are in column B. Fill in the year, month and day in C2, D2 and E2, then fill all three down to row 5.
